Dalston Curve Garden: a community green space in Hackney
Discover Dalston Curve Garden, a hidden green oasis in the heart of Hackney.
Hidden in the heart of Hackney, the Dalston Curve Garden, once the Eastern Curve Railway, underwent a significant transformation in 2010. Crafted in partnership by architects Muf, landscape experts J&L Gibbons, Hackney Council, local residents, and community groups, this sanctuary emerged as a vibrant community garden, addressing the scarcity of green spaces in Dalston.
The garden boasts diverse plant life, meticulously tended by an in-house team and volunteers, nurturing a thriving ecosystem and supporting local wildlife. Its assortment of trees, shrubs, perennials, and vibrant blooms provide a haven for bees and butterflies.
Distinctive structures such as the timber pavilion crafted by Exyzt, the Pineapple House conservatory, and a stage envisioned by Morag Myerscough serve as vibrant cultural hubs. They offer spaces for music events, volunteer gardening activities, and provide an ideal setting for gathering with family, friends, or for a relaxed date.
Beyond its tranquil setting, Dalston Eastern Curve Garden's Garden Cafe offers beverages, seasonal soups from garden-grown produce, homemade cakes, and wood-fired pizzas, each purchase directly supporting the garden's growth, educational programs, and community events.
The garden's peaceful ambiance has made it a cherished escape for those seeking refuge from the city's bustle. At the entrance, donโt miss the historic Hackney Peace Carnival Mural, a lasting symbol since 1985. Initially designed by Hackney resident Ray Walker and completed by his friend Mike Jones, it remains a testament to the enduring legacy of the community.
