Showy and elegant in bloom, Salvia pratensis ‘Indigo’ (Meadow Sage) is a clump-forming, herbaceous perennial with erect stems bearing long terminal spikes of whorled, deep violet-blue flowers with brown calyces. Blooming in early summer, they are borne above the foliage of aromatic, ovate, dark green leaves. Easy to grow and trouble-free, Meadow Sage tolerates heat and humidity. It works well in perennial borders of lightly shaded woodland gardens. Meadow Sage is an excellent bee, butterfly, or hummingbird plant.

  • Grows up to 24-36 in. tall (60-90 cm) and 12-24 in. wide (30-60 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun (light shade is tolerated) in light, moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soils. Do not let the soil dry out.
  • Well-suited to beds and borders, wall-side borders, city gardens, coastal gardenscottage gardens, or Mediterranean gardens.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Deer resistant.
  • Remove flower spikes as they fade to promote new blooms.
  • Propagate by seed in pots in a cold frame in spring.
  • Salvia pratensis species is native to Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa.
