Bambusa oldhamii or Giant Timber Bamboo is a spectacular ornamental, rhizomatous bamboo that is generally grown to block out views of undesirable objects - especially larger buildings.
But it shouldn't be forgotten that this plant is also fabulous to look at, with its towering and very robust culms (stalks) that are covered in a white bloom during the first year that turn to green and yellow as they age.
It also bears thickly, dense and very attractive foliage as well. You lose a view and gain a striking vista.
For such enormous bamboo its surprising to note that it can also be grown indoors in a pot - you just need to prune back the culms as they grow.
It can handle Australian cold winters (down to -7C) and produces new shoots throughout summer and autumn, each of which will astound you in reaching full height in just a few months.
