36 of the Best Signs From the Equality Marches

In the middle of Pride Month, the Equality March for the LGBTQ+ community took place in Washington, D.C., on Sunday. But this year, it was less of a traditional parade than a rally in the vein of those we've seen already this year, like the Women's March on Washington and the People's Climate March. Beginning by the capital's Farragut Square and ending on the National Mall, the rally highlighted a number of issues in the LGBTQ+ community, including "disability rights, preventing violence against LGBTQ people, and support for LGBTQ immigrants," according to PBS. Sunday was also the day before the one-year anniversary of the horrific shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

On the Equality March website, the organizers of the event laid out the rally's goals: "The Equality March for Unity & Pride is a grassroots movement which will mobilize the diverse LGBTQ+ communities to peacefully and clearly address concerns about the current political landscape and how it is contributing to the persecution and discrimination of LGBTQ+ individuals."

According to Vox, the significant shift in tone for the Equality March was a deliberate move on the part of the organizers, who are drawing on the history and spirit of the very first Pride march, which took place to commemorate the Stonewall riot that broke ground for LGBTQ+ activism in the United States. (L.A., for example, also replaced its traditional parade with a "resist" march.) Also, as with earlier marches this year, sister rallies took place in cities across the world, from Anchorage, Alaska, to Sitges, Spain.
