Met Gala co-chair Penélope Cruz just arrived on the Met Gala red carpet in New York City in a stunning Chanel wedding gown, complete with a sequin-embroidered hood that doubles as a veil. She wore her dark hair slicked back in a center-parted bun, allowing the sheer hood and heavy earrings to shine. It's giving (fashion) royalty.

Cruz nailed the gala's theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” with the bridal outfit. Fans of the fashion house, which Lagerfeld helmed from 1983 until his death in 2019, will recall that each couture show closes with a Chanel bride. In fact, Cruz's co-chair Dua Lipa hit the carpet in a Chanel bridal look first seen on Claudia Schiffer in 1992.

Lagerfeld, a legend in the fashion world, was the longtime creative director at both Chanel and Fendi until his death. The dress code was simple: “in honor of Karl.”

Cruz co-chaired fashion's biggest, boldest event alongside Lipa, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, and, as always, Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour. Oscar-winning actor Cruz was close with Lagerfeld, and became a face of the Chanel brand in 2018. In 2019 she walked the runway in what would become his final Chanel show.

On May 1, just hours before she hit the carpet, Penélope Cruz shared behind-the-scenes photos from a Chanel photo shoot, in which Lagerfeld's signature white ponytail is visible in the foreground. “My dear Karl,” she captioned the photo, “I hope you are feeling the love. I know you are.” The slide show also features photos of the two embracing, with Lagerfeld getting as close to a smile as he ever did for photos.
