Phyllis Lyon (1924–2020) and Del Martin (1921-2008) were lesbian pioneers and activists. They co-founded the first lesbian rights organization in the United States, the Daughters of Bilitis, in 1955 and served as editors of its nationally distributed publication, The Ladder. Lyon and Martin were involved in numerous other organizations dedicated to fighting for LGBTQ rights throughout their lives, including the struggle for marriage equality. In 2008, they became the first same-sex couple legally married in San Francisco.
