This month we visit the island nation of Micronesia. Many thanks to Meg for creating the challenge for us.
Micronesia, formally known as the Federated States of Micronesia or FSM, is part of the Oceania region and consists of about 2,000 small islands. The American dollar is the currency, and English is the major language. The economy depends on agriculture and fishing.
✱ The capital of the FSM is Palikir, which is located on the largest and highest island of the chain, Pohnpei. Palikir has a population of roughly 6700 (out of 100K across all islands) and was declared Micronesia's capital in 1989.
✱ It's existence was acknowledged by Portuguese and Spanish explorers in the 15th century, but wasn't colonized by the Spanish until the late 1800's. It was later sold to Germany, was occupied by Japan during WWI, then governed by the United States after World Was II. It gained its independence in 1979.
✱ It has a Compact of Free Association agreement with US to this day, which grants mutual benefits to both countries. One such benefit is the right of the US to maintain bases; an offshoot to this is that the US is responsible for defense as the country has no army.
✱ It is considered one of the least visited areas in the world despite its beautiful ocean setting and lush greenery. As you will notice below in the challenge, the capital city does not have much to offer the tourist, but the surrounding area is full of incredible adventures.

1. Nan Madol
An hour's drive from Palikir is the World Heritage Archaeological Site of Nan Madol. Nan Madol was the capital of the Saudeleur Dynasty, the first organized government uniting the people of Pohnpei. Most of the city was built between the 13th-17th centuries by the Saudeleurs, descendants of two brothers of unknown provenance, who founded a religious community here in the 6th century. It is a cultural wonder, with walls and structures, thought to be temples or palaces, composed of massive columnar basalt stones that are so heavy that no one has figured out how they were built. Though local legend says that the two founding brothers were sorcerers, who could levitate huge stones with the aid of a flying dragon. A visitor can view these amazing structures from the shore, or wade across a waterway to walk among them.

2. Kepirohi Falls
Kepirohi, which lies on the lower Mand Stream (Pilen Mand) in Kepirohi Kousapw, is certainly Pohnpei’s most famous and most photographed waterfall. It makes a nice picnic stop after a visit to the ruins of Nan Madol just a few minutes away. A large volume of water cascades over a wide, sloped pyramid of basalt rock and fills a shallow pool that is perfect for swimming. A well-maintained path leads to the falls from the parking area.

3. Ant Atoll
Ant Atoll, a small atoll lying off the west coast of Pohnpei, is considered one of the most peaceful and unspoiled South Pacific islands by reviewers. It features long stretches of unspoiled beaches, and is ideal for swimming, snorkeling and diving. Oftentimes there are no other groups or visitors around, making it an ideal getaway. According to one write-up, Ant Atoll is privately owned by the Rohsa (Traditional Leader/King) who is a conservation leader and visionary. He does not want the Atoll developed by large resort companies because he wants to preserve the natural beauty and landscape. I'm dreaming of this one!

4. Pilen Seleur Eel Pools
An attraction that is just outside Palikir but is a little difficult to find is the Eel Pools. Once you locate it and pay the small entrance fee along with purchasing a can of eel food (i.e., makerel), there is a steep path down to the pond. There someone will open the can for you and entice the creatures to have a meal. It is quite fascinating to see such large eels being so tame and used to being fed by humans. These eels are important to the locals and are not caught for food.

5. Sokehs Rock
Put on your hiking shoes and scale Sokehs Rock (or Ridge) for breathtaking views of the water and more once you reach the communications tower. There are many good photo ops on the way up; pay close attention and you will walk right by World War II weapons. Up on top, are more accessible Japanese war ruins, and evidence of the tunnels built by the locals. Bring a camera and water!

6. What's cooking in Micronesia?
While visiting the South Pacific be ready to try all sorts of terrific tropical goodies. A feast can include fish, mangrove clams, sea cucumber, crab, and octopus, possibly flavored with spicy Pohnpeian pepper and with a side of rice. Fruits and vegetables abound; other than the familiar bananas and yam there are coconuts, breadfruit, soursop, taro, and cassava. Sakau, or Kava, is the most notable item in Micronesian culture. It’s a soporific drink made from the powdered root of a pepper tree with an earthy flavor and calming effect. Besides numbing your mouth and throat, it also puts you in a darn sociable mood!
