Altrusa Native Plant Garden

Dedicated in 2015, the Altrusa Native Plant Garden is nestled between the Bartram Trail and the lower pond near the John A. Nevison Amphitheater.

In the early 2000s, Altrusa International of Spartanburg (District 3) began selling Altrusa roses, a miniature rose developed in New Zealand and named in honor of the Altrusa organization. Altrusa roses were shipped across the U.S. over the course of 18 months. After a decade of searching for a project that would serve the Spartanburg community, club members voted to gift Hatcher Garden the Altrusa Native Plant Garden.

Altrusa International, a global non-profit organization of volunteers whose common goal is to improve the communities in which they live, provided Hatcher with 700 perennials and trees of 16 different varieties which were installed in 2014. The garden includes plants discovered and identified by William Bartram during the pre-revolutionary era.

In the Fall of 2021, Altrusa International of Spartanburg dedicated part of the Thomas Bartram Trail as the Altruas Pathway that goes past the garden room.
