Oscar-winning producer Steve Tisch is donating $10 million to Tel Aviv University’s Department of Film and Television. The university is planning to expand the department into a full school, which will be named the Steve Tisch School of Film and Television.
Filmmakers who have studied at Tel Aviv University’s film department include Dror Moreh (The Gatekeepers), Ari Folman (Waltz With Bashir) and Hagai Levi (writer of In Treatment and The Affair). TAU ranked No. 12 on The Hollywood Reporter‘s 2014 list of the top international film schools. Gideon Raff, one of Homeland‘s Emmy-winning writers, said that the department “provided me with the tools, knowledge and resources to tell my stories, along with an environment to grow, which helped me get where I am today.”

“Steve Tisch’s commitment to the film school is a tremendous vote of confidence in the talent of our students and faculty members,” said Joseph Klafter, president of Tel Aviv University. “The new Steve Tisch School of Film and Television will not only enhance academic training and knowledge in the discipline but will also strengthen Israel’s influence on the cinematic arts globally.”
Commented Yaron Bloch, head of the department of film and TV: “We are now in the midst of major changes in the aesthetics of moving images and the the ways in which films and television programs are made, distributed and consumed. Our students, graduates and faculty are at the forefront of these trends and are exploring emerging possibilities in their artistic work and academic research. Steve Tisch’s contribution will make it possible to extend their impact and success both locally and internationally.”
Tisch, a partner at Escape Artists Productions and co-owner of the New York Giants, received the best picture Oscar for 1994’s Forrest Gump. His most recent movie, Unfinished Business starring Vince Vaughn, opens March 6.
