To commemorate the release of Siren 2, Sony Computer Entertainment had the Yamibito pictured above pose for a photo-op outside the Tsutaya retailer in Shibuya on Thursday evening. We didn't line up for a pic with the Yambibito (we prefer the original's Shibito), but we did have a Siren 2 Valentines Day card forced upon us.
Siren series director and mastermind Keiichiro Sotoyama was at this mini launch event, but he didn't really say anything. The event was notably lacking ambulances of any form. Alas, D3 Publisher's Zombie VS Ambulance is a different (and much suckier) game.
This week, we're following-up on last week's look at the DS's Famitsu review record with a similar look at the PSP. Just turn the page!
Last week, we provided a look back at how DS software was reviewed in the Japanese game press -- specifically, Weekly Famitsu. Aside from Weekly Famitsu, the only source for DS scores is through sister publication Famitsu Cube + Advance, but the scores tend to match up pretty closely between these two.
This week, we're back with a similar look at the PSP. Sony products are reviewed in Famitsu, Dengeki PS2 and Hyper PlayStation, but to be consistent, we're sticking with just the Famitsu scores.
Here's how the PSP has ranked on the pages of Famitsu since its 12/12/2004 Japanese launch. In the chart below, click the column headers to sort by release date, name, publisher and total score. You can also click the name for details on the title.

Famitsu has thus far reviewed 120 DS games. For the PSP, the above chart includes just 85 scores. We're missing a couple of scores, but it should be clear that many PSP titles weren't reviewed by the magazine.
Famitsu doesn't, in general, review straight ports, so games like Princess Crown and Rockman Dash didn't get reviewed. Similarly, mahjong titles, pachinko titles and alternative games are skipped out on, so games like AI Mahjong, Adventure Player and Fist of the North Star Portable weren't reviewed. Alternative-style games were the hot sellers on the DS, while they didn't amount to much on the PSP.
The PSP lineup is also filled with something the DS doesn't have: budget re-releases. So far, the PSP has had the following games re-released in budget packages:
So what about the DS? Zero. Nintendo and its third parties haven't given the system any budget re-releases yet. Although with DS game cards apparently not being all that pricey, perhaps we can expect a budget line in the near future (hopefully not as long as it took Nintendo to bring the Value Selection to the Game Boy Advance).
With the DS, it was pretty clear who was at the top as far as number of releases and highest average score was: Nintendo. It's not so clear for the PSP, so let's take a look at the average rating for each publisher. Click the column headers to sort the data.
COMPANY | GAMES | AVG |
Konami | 5 | 8.2 |
Koei | 3 | 7.9 |
Namco | 7 | 7.8 |
Tecmo | 1 | 7.8 |
Sega | 3 | 7.6 |
Capcom | 4 | 7.6 |
From Software | 3 | 7.6 |
Genki | 2 | 7.5 |
Atlus | 1 | 7.5 |
Sony Computer Entertainment | 16 | 7.4 |
Ongakukan | 1 | 7.3 |
Banpresto | 1 | 7.3 |
Nippon Ichi Software | 1 | 7.3 |
Electronic Arts | 10 | 7.3 |
Bandai | 10 | 7.2 |
Taito | 5 | 7.1 |
Vivendi Universal Games | 1 | 7.0 |
Idea Factory | 2 | 6.8 |
Eidos | 1 | 6.5 |
Starfish SD | 1 | 6.5 |
Cyber Front | 1 | 6.3 |
Hudson | 4 | 6.0 |
Marvelous Interactive | 1 | 5.8 |
Now Productions | 1 | 5.6 |
As with the DS, Sony Computer Entertainment, the PSP's first party publisher, had the most releases. However, Famitsu apparently found more favor with third party titles, as Konami took the ratings crown even with a fair number of titles. It's also worth noting that the PSP had a lot of EA support, which means plenty of American-style games.
Keep in mind that the above list excludes titles that weren't reviewed, which takes a few points from companies like Capcom (two Rockman games not reviewed), Atlus (Princess Crown) and especially Koei (Harukanaru, Sangokushi, etc.).
The average Famitsu score for PSP software was 7.2, up by 0.1 from the average DS score. We'll let you decide for yourself which lineup you prefer.

FAMITSU -- NO. 897
The lovely Yui Ichikawa appears on the cover of this week's Famitsu, with an eye-popping set of pictures that no man should see in public while wearing tight pants. Yui-chan was born in Tokyo on 2/10/86 and grew into a 158cm tall A-type beauty. She made her debut as a gravure model at the tender, pure, virgin age of 15 and went on to work in such films as Hotman and Juyon (known as The Grudge in America).
And guess what? Yui-chan's got the major game connection going! She's the star of the Japanese film adaptation of SCE's Siren, which just hit theaters to coincide with the 2/9 release of the Siren 2 game. She says that she loves scary games like Resident Evil and Clock Tower, so she sometimes has friends over to play (I'd like to get in on that house party!), and she found Siren to be the scariest of the bunch.
With all the girls Famitsu's been putting on its covers, there'll be no shortage of hotties for the Gaming Life in Japan Young Idol bit, should we ever resurrect that section. In the meanwhile, for all your IGN Asian Babe needs, turn to our communist friends over in China who bring you the latest look at Chinese chicks in Gaming Life in China.
Hot, game-related, carpal-tunnel-syndrome inducing girls aside, this week's Famitsu has only a handful of big stories. Sengoku Basara 2 is the big game in this issue, with director Makoto Yamamoto and producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi sharing a few comments on the sequel. Kobayashi reveals that there are quite a few "cool" characters in the game, but Yukimura Sanada and Masamune Date, both of whom are playable in part 2, seem to be popular among gamers. We should look forward to dramatic battles, Kobayashi states. Yamamoto, meanwhile, reveals that the sequel has three times as many stages as the original, as well as new modes of play and game systems. The game is still without a final release date, but will arrive some time in 2006.
Outside of Basara 2, this week's issue continues Famitsu's recent trend towards mega Japanese coverage -- the type of games that probably won't make it over to America. Honou no Takyuubin, a new PS2 delivery game with character designs and scenario direction from Kazuhiko Shimamoto of baseball manga Gyakkyou Nine fame, is joined by a Dynasty Warriors mahjong game for the PSP and a few brain training rip offs for the NDS. The magazine also has a little blurb on _summer## from GN Software for the PS2. The name is read "Under Bar Summer Double Sharp."
The other trend in Famitsu of late has been mega DS coverage. This week, the magazine offers a look at some hot upcoming DS games, including New Super Mario Bros., although the two pages don't reveal much in the way of new information.
The magazine also gives a look back at the year end sales rush, which the DS, of course, won. A humorous line graph tracking system sales for the last few months of the year shows the DS reaching weekly sales of close to 600,000 units compared to the next highest system (the PSP) hitting just under 150,000 units in the same week.
We all knew that DS hardware ruled the holiday season in Japan, but software was no slouch either. DS took 41.4% of software sales for the period between 10/27/2005 and 1/29/2006. This bests the PS2's 36.2%, the Game Boy Advance's 9.4% and the PSP's 7.1%. In comparison, the PS2 had 57.1% of the market last year and 55.4% the year before.
This isn't to say that the PS2 necessarily sold a significantly lower amount of software this year. Last year's holiday season saw total software sales of 21.99 million units. This year, that number shot up to 24.28 million.
DS commanded most slots in the top 30 sales chart for the period. Animal Crossing and Motto Nou wo Kitaeru Otona no DS Training took the top one and two slots respectively, besting Kingdom Hearts II. In all, the DS grabbed 13 of the 30 spots, just above the PS2's 12. GameCube got two slots compared to PSP's 1.
There's just a handful of reviews this week, as Japanese gamers await a massive end-of-February release rush that includes Disgaea 2 and Genso Suikoden V.

How convenient for Square Enix that a less-than-stellar review of Dirge of Cerberus: FFVII should be delayed until half a million people have purchased the game.

RANK-IN!!!
Wondering what's hot in the Japanese gaming scene? This section of Gaming Life in Japan brings you the latest charts for hardware, home software and arcade titles, along with a top thirty most wanted list.
We've sourced retail tracker Media Create for the software and hardware charts and game magazine Famitsu Weekly for the most wanted chart. Arcade results are taken from Arcadia and Famitsu.
We'll also occasionally provide sales data from more specialist magazines in the weekly magazine recap section. Check out that area for closer looks at sales for game titles on individual system.
Be sure and check back every week to find out what Japanese gamers are into!
GAME-RANK-IN: 01.30.06 - 02.05.06 |
A few newbies made it into the top 50 list:
11. Exciting Pro Wrestling 7 Smackdown! VS. Raw 2006 (Yukes, PS2)
27. Mother 1&2 -- Value Selection (Nintendo, GBA)
48. Kotoba no Puzzle Mojipittan Advance -- Value Selection (Namco, GBA)
Nintendo and its third parties released a good bunch of Value Selection budget titles for the GBA last week, but it seems that only two made any sort of impact.
According to Media Create, the top 100 games for this week sold 945,391 units, 53.19% of last week's total. Seven new titles took up 17.26% of that.

RELEASE DATES
This section of Gaming Life in Japan provides you with an up-to-date release list of games coming out in Japan. We list pretty much everything that's been announced.
In order to make the list more readable, we've split things up into two sections: games that have a release date and games that are TBA. On this page, you'll find the games that have some sort of date attached to them -- even if it's just something vague like TBA 2007.
Recent changes, including new release dates, new names or new prices, are marked in bold. New entries are in red If you encounter something you think may be an error in the list, please e-mail us about it.

RELEASE DATES (TBA)
This section of Gaming Life in Japan provides you with an up-to-date release list of games coming out in Japan. We list pretty much everything that's been announced.
In order to make the list more readable, we've split things up into two sections: games that have a release date and games that have a TBA date. On this page, you'll find the games that have a TBA date. For games that have a more specific date, turn one page back.
Recent changes, including new release dates, new names or new prices, are marked in bold. New entries are in red If you encounter something you think may be an error in the list, please e-mail us about it.
