A lucky basketball supporter from Wexford has driven off in the top prize from Basketball Ireland's national draw 2014.

Fintan Ryan of Clonmines, Wellingtonbridge - the well-known Gusserane G.A.A. and St. Leonards soccer player - was in such disbelief when contacted about his win, he thought it was a prank.

Ryan was one of over 13,000 people who supported basketball in Ireland through purchasing a ticket for the 2014 national draw and last week picked up the top prize of a brand new Suzuki Swift.

The Basketball Ireland initiative enabled local clubs and organisations to fundraise for themselves by providing access to a €25,000 prize fund.

Fintan was doing his bit for Irish Wheelchair Basketball when he purchased his €10 ticket.

'I bought a ticket through my neighbour Michael Hennessy who is an Irish international wheelchair basketballer. He had sold a good lot of tickets and it just as easily could have been him! It's a lovely car so I'll be well able for the roads around Clonmines.'

National draw co-ordinator Conor James handed over the keys on behalf of Basketball Ireland:

'We are delighted that our top prize has gone to a good home in Wexford. It was a hugely successful project and the Suzuki from Gerry Caffrey Motors proved a huge draw. As you can imagine, a lot of work and preparation went it to this, so it was great to see the outcome and hand the keys over to a shocked Fintan.'

The winner will be motoring to a big sporting assignment on Saturday next when he is expected to line out at right half-back with Gusserane in the Tom Doyle Supplies SFC semi-final.
