Description:
Yellow Pea, Lathyrus aphaca. Small pea flower about 10mm wide. Flowers are solitary on stem up to 100cm. Calyx-teeth are equal, 2-3 times length of tube with a corolla 6-18 mm. Th flower is held on held on long pedicel. the seed pods re 2-3 cm in length and turn brown as they age. Habitat: dry grasslands including sand, gravel and chalk. Plant is cultuvated for human consumption in Asia and Mediterranean . Forage and feed crop for livestock. If large quantities are consumed, the plant has a toxin which causes Lathyrism, affecting nervous system. Crops are susceptible from broomrape, Orobanche crenata, infestation. Flowers April-August.
