Peeling Puffball - Lycoperdon marginatum Round puffball with whitish to brownish spines that protrude individually, and often aggregate at their tips into pointed scales. As they mature, their spines slough off in patches, rather than individually as other puffballs do.<br />

Peeling Puffball - Lycoperdon marginatum

Round puffball with whitish to brownish spines that protrude individually, and often aggregate at their tips into pointed scales. As they mature, their spines slough off in patches, rather than individually as other puffballs do.

Habitat: Puffball growing on the ground in a mixed forest with lots of oak and pine. This puffball was growing on the edge of the woods – in a grassy area.

''Lycoperdon marginatum'', commonly known as the peeling puffball, is a type of puffball mushroom in the genus ''Lycoperdon''. A common species, it is found in Europe and North America, where it grows on the ground. It is characterized by the way that the spiny outer layer peels off in sheets.
