Isaria tenuipes
Not 100 percent on ID, but it seems the most likely candidate. Sorry for lack of in-situ photo! Urghh! Dropped the ball there. Found at the edge of a dense mixed (hickory-oak) forest in Gordon County, Georgia, US. June 20, 2019.
I noticed the fruiting body poking out of mud/soil on the side of a ridge. Mostly oaks and hickories growing nearby. With careful digging, I produced the Lepidopteran pupal host (not sure of species, so feel free to help out there as well).
Cordyceps tenuipes is a cosmopolitan fungus that parasitizes insects. It is also known as Isaria tenuipes and Paecilomyces tenuipes.
