Uncaria Tomentosa (Cat’s Claw, Una de Gato) is a well-researched plant with a wide range of active valuable compounds. Cat’s claw contains several active compositions including sitosterols, rutin, chlorogenic acid, catechin, epicatechin, hirsutine, oleanolic acid, procyanidins and uncarine. Other reports revealed that compounds other than oxindole alkaloids, such as rotundifoline, coumarins, flavonoids, quinovic acid glycosides and triterpenes may be responsible for the Cat’s claw therapeutic effects. Cat's claw has been used as a traditional medicine by the indigenous peoples of the Amazonian rainforest for at least 2000 years to cure fever, infections, wounds, menstrual irregularity, joints inflammation and many other conditions and illnesses, like tumors, gastric ulcers and arthritis. Cat’s claw is a liana deriving its name from small curved-back thorns that resemble the claws of a cat. It is widely distributed in the Peruvian Amazonian rainforest and some other areas of South and Central America.
