Overland Park native and former Sporting Kansas City star Matt Besler will play the 2021 season with new MLS franchise Austin FC.Besler, who parted ways with Sporting KC on Dec. 9 after 12 years, announced his new home in a tweet Wednesday morning that appears to throw some shade at Sporting. In the tweet, Besler is shown driving while lip syncing to Austin native and actor Matthew McConaughey talking about how “sometimes in life you get kicked to the curb and you’re faced with a choice.”“You can stay on the ground, or you can get back in your car and keep driving forward cause you never know what’s up ahead,” the voiceover continued. “Maybe some place like you’ve never been before. A place like Austin FC.”Besler, 33, was out of contract after the 2020 season and Sporting decided to go a different direction in December. He appeared in just 10 games this past season for Sporting, but the longtime captain appeared in nearly 300 regular-season games for SKC during his career.“We are pleased to add a proven defender to the squad that fits the profile we are looking for in a player,” Sporting director of Austin FC Claudio Reyna said in a club release. “Matt’s unique blend of leadership and competitive experience is a valuable combination of strengths, and we are excited to have him continue his career in Austin.”On the international stage, Besler was part of the United States team at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. He’s earned 47 caps for the USMNT and was also part of Concacaf Gold Cup-winning sides in 2013 and 2017.“I’m ecstatic about this opportunity,” Besler said in a release. “After playing in MLS for so many years, I can’t help but feel excited to join an ambitious project with Austin FC. I’ve seen amazing things from Austin’s fanbase already, and I truly look forward to playing in front of them.”When it was announced Sporting was going a different direction in December, Besler said: "I never imagined saying goodbye to my hometown club like this."
