Alfriston

Alfriston High Street Copyright Chris Shoebridge.jpg

Alfriston is one of the most beautiful downland villages in East Sussex. Many of its flint-rich buildings date back to the thirteenth century, and you’ll find three medieval pubs on the high street. Visit the Star Inn and touch the original Sanctuary Post, which offered the church’s protection to pilgrims and pilferers alike. Walk past the Tye, over the white bridge and along the river Cuckmere. Visit the National Trust’s first ever property, the Clergy House, and take an afternoon tea at one of the village’s tearooms. We recommend Chestnuts for a choice of gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan cakes and meals.
