A man claims to have unearthed the true identity of the famous Athena 'Tennis Girl' - and says it's his ex-wife.

Peter Atkinson, 72, has spent 30 years claiming the woman flashing her bum in the iconic 1980s picture is not Fiona Butler, as is commonly believed.

Athena and photographer Martin Elliot always stated the famous image was taken of Fiona in 1976.

But Peter says the real star of the cheeky poster is his ex-wife who posed for the picture four years earlier - and now claims he has the proof.

Claims: Mr Atkinson says this postcard dated 1974 offers proof of the model's true identity (

Peter bought a postcard off eBay of the poster stamped with the postmark of 1974, which he says shows the picture existed before 1976.

A calender from 1974 featuring the picture also backs up the theory, he claims.

Peter said: "The photo used in the Tennis Girl photos is not Fiona Butler, but is my ex-wife.

"Fiona was photographed by Martin Elliot, but that was years after the initial photo was taken.

"Initially Martin photographed my ex-wife, and tried to flog it to the poster manufacturer Athena.

"Athena weren't interested to begin with, but eventually they came back to him and commissioned him to take the photo properly and lent him some professional gear."

"Fiona has always said she had a photoshoot with Martin and she thinks that the photo shoot they had was the one that was used - that's not the case."

Peter says his ex-wife, who is not being named, posed for photographer Martin Elliot in 1972 - wearing the tennis skirt and showing her bum.

But he says in 1976 Martin then recreated the image with Fiona, his 18-year-old girlfriend at the time.

The image later went global and adorned walls around the world - and Martin always said the star was Fiona.

But Peter maintains the actual image used was the one taken of his ex-wife who was a tennis coach and had given Martin lessons.

The iconic and cheeky poster has been a popular bedroom pin-up since the 1970s and remains one of the best-selling posters to this day.

The identity of the beauty in the photo remained anonymous until 1989, when Fiona Butler stepped forward to announce that she was the face behind the behind.

Mr Atkinson immediately thought this was not the true identity because he had been married to the 'real' Tennis girl, who has always insisted she remain anonymous.

They were married between 1980 and 1986, but she didn't reveal she had posed for the 'Tennis Girl' shoot until a while into their relationship.

Peter says she told him she was a tennis coach and Martin Elliot was one of her pupils.

Elliot apparently talked her into posing for a few cheeky photos, and he staged the photo shoot in 1972.

The pair had already parted by the time Fiona came forward as the Tennis Girl, and Peter has devoted his life ever since to tracking down evidence.

Peter believes that Fiona is honest in claiming that she thought she was the Tennis Girl, but that she had been misled by Mr Elliot.

Martin Elliot died of cancer in 2010, but before he died Peter was able to orchestrate a meeting with him, in which Peter claims he confessed that Fiona is not the star of the pictures.

Peter, who lives near Camelford, Cornwall, said: "He confessed it to me - but I can't prove it. He said that he would give it me in writing, in a postcard, but it never arrived."

Since Mr Elliot's death the royalties for the poster have been paid to his widow, Noelle Bott.
