As cities across the world have developed, modernised and revolutionised its architecture over the century, each has become distinct from another, with gargantuan skyscrapers, castles and historic landmarks. The beauty of a skyline changes throughout the day, a scene which marries perfectly with a sunset and then when the sky is dark, the city comes alive.

But there are some cities which are apparently more than others. According to research done by AttractionTickets.com, there are ten places across the globe whose skylines are non-negotiable.

By looking at the figures from Instagram, their research determined which city boasts the most picture perfect skyline. Despite London making the top ten, it was outrageously beaten to the top spot by an unlikely US destination - the Windy City, Chicago.

London shockingly didn't come first

The city was way out in front with 334,568 tags used on social media. Chicago was in fact home to the world’ s first skyscraper back in 1885, and is currently home to the Willis tower which stands at 1454ft, one of the tallest in the world.

Although the capital didn’t take the crown, it was recognised as having some of the more iconic buildings and architecture, such as Big Ben, the London Eye, the Gherkin, and, of course, the Shard. With 281,152 tags, it was some way behind Chicago - who ever knows why?

Making up the top three most picturesque skylines was, unsurprisingly, New York. The home to probably the most distinct and recognisable skyscrapers in the world. Boasting the Empire State building and the likes of the Chrysler Building, you wouldn’t want to miss an opportunity to snap the scenery.

What's more iconic than New York City?

US cities dominated the top ten, with Los Angeles sneaking in at the bottom in tenth place. The only other non-American city entry was Jakarta, Indonesia, who placed eighth.
