Picea likiangensis (Purple Liakiang Spruce)

Picea likiangensis (Purple Liakiang Spruce) is a coniferous evergreen tree that is native to China. It is primarily found in the high-altitude regions of the eastern Himalayas, including Yunnan, Sichuan, and Tibet. The species is named after Lijiang, a city in Yunnan Province.

Lijiang Spruce is a medium-sized to large tree that can reach heights of up to 100 feet (30 meters) with a straight trunk and a conical to columnar crown. The branches are horizontal and slightly pendulous. The bark is thin, smooth, and grayish-brown in color.

The needles of Picea likiangensis are short and stiff, measuring about 0.4 to 0.8 inches (1 to 2 centimeters) in length. They are arranged spirally on the branches and are dark green in color. The tree produces cones that are cylindrical in shape, usually ranging from 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 centimeters) long. The cones initially have a purplish hue, turning brown as they mature.

Lijiang Spruce is well-adapted to its native mountainous habitat, thriving in cold and alpine environments. It can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, including rocky and well-drained soils. The species is known for its ability to withstand harsh winters, strong winds, and heavy snow loads.
