Former physio returns as part of Shearer backroom team

By Craig Hope

HERE'S the first picture of former Newcastle United midfielder and physio Paul Ferris after confirmation that he has returned to the club as part of Alan Shearer's backroom staff.

The 43-year-old, who is also a qualified barrister, will be responsible for overseeing the medical department during the final eight games of the season.

And Shearer said: "Paul Ferris was with Newcastle for 13 years as a physio and then went on to be a barrister.

"But he still loves that side of things.

"Newcastle, more than any other football club, has had its fair share of injuries.

"I think it's important that he can look into that with the other medical staff."

Ferris signed for United in 1981 from Lisburn Juniors in Northern Ireland and became the club's youngest ever debutant at the time when he appeared aged just 16 years and 294 days.

But a medial ligament injury meant he enjoyed just 13 outings in a black-and-white shirt and moved into local non-league football before returning as physio in 1993 under Kevin Keegan.
