WARREN Mitchell has passed away at the age of 89.

The actor was best known for his role of Alf Garnett in BBC sitcom Till Death Us Do Part and In Sickness and In Health.

His great nephew broke the news on Twitter writing: "Just got the news my great uncle Warren Mitchell (aka Alf Garnett) died in the early hours of Saturday morning.

"The last of his generation, wonderful and funny man RIP.”

A spokesperson later revealed: "Sadly we can confirm Warren Mitchell died in the early hours of Saturday 14th November surrounded by his family.

"He has been in poor health for some time but was cracking jokes to the last."

Warren’s nephew added to The Mirror: "We knew he had not been well but his death is still a shock. We will miss him terribly."

"He will always be remembered for Alf Garnett but there was so much more to him than that. He was a great Shakespearean actor and played many, many other roles.

Warren suffered a stroke back in 2004. However, he was back on stage just a week last in Arthur Miller’s play The Price.

He is survived by his wife Constance Wake and three children Rebecca, Daniel and Anna.
