Seashore pink is quite unlike other members of the genus. Thick, leathery, ovate leaves form a glossy, evergreen rosette. Pinky-purple clusters of flowers bloom continually from June to November. Winter foliage takes on a lovely, deep burgundy hue.

Like most Dianthus, D. japonicus prefers well-drained soil in full sun. It acts as a short-lived perennial or biennial, but it self-seeds reliably and persists in the garden for years.
