Ironwood are hardwood trees reaching up to 50 m in height with trunks over 2 m in diameter. The thick, leathery leaves are dark green. Young leaves are narrow, pointed oval in shape. The seeds are dispersed by birds, which eat the fruit which are berry-like drupes. The fruits are ellipsoid or globose (round).
