Stems erect, with dense, white, appressed hairs. Leaves in basal cluster, long and narrow, hairless or with fine white hairs. Flower heads solitary, 1/4–3/4 in., with hairy bracts under disk flowers; no ray flowers. Grows in exposed stony soils at mid to higher elevations, sometimes on serpentine. Var. nudatus, from Waldo in southwestern Oregon, has very fine hairs on cup at base of flower heads; leaves, both hairless and with stiff, straight, sharp hairs, arise from same roots in some plants.
