Mother’s Day: The best bouquets to order online
Treat the special person in your life with flowers this Mother's Day
After a tough few years, this Mother’s Day is a great opportunity to tell one of the most important women in your life how much she means to you.
In the UK, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday 27 March this year. If you struggle with remembering this date each year, you’re far from alone. Mother’s Day always takes place on the fourth Sunday in the festival of Lent each year, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday, a date that differs each year.
This celebratory annual event aims to honour and give thanks to the women who have played an important role in our lives.
The origins of the day go back to the Middle Ages, when people who moved away from where they had grown up for work were permitted to return to their families or “mother churches” for this Christian festival of Lent.
At the time, children as young as 10-years-old would often leave home to work in domestic service, so this was one of few opportunities families had to reunite.
Traditionally, churches holding Mothering Sunday services would provide flowers for children to give to their mothers.
While the original “mothering” aspect of the occasion had very little connection to the way mothers are celebrated today, it has since evolved to become an occasion to celebrate mothers, with flowers and chocolates proving to be two of the most enduring and universal gifts for mother’s to receive on this special day.
Although there are a multitude of different flowers, plants, colours and fragrances to choose from, those looking for a particularly significant bouquet will be pleased to discover that different flowers have different meanings.
According to the flower delivery network Interflora, carnations are a good choice for this occasion. Signifying admiration, deep love and affection, these perennials come in a whole host of colours and sizes.
And while red roses have long represented romantic love, yellow roses represent friendship and joy, while pink roses signify gratitude and appreciation, making them a great choice for mum.
We’ve selected some of the best Mother’s Day delivery flowers for when you want to arrange a special delivery of your own for this important person in your life.
