Frequency: Fairly common.

stalkless caps often fused laterally and extending 8 – 12” [20 – 30 cm].
Densely matted/woolly (nearly smooth in age). Margin orange-/bright
golden-yellow. Fertile surface: Dull brown w/ many dark-brown
setae.When dry, it is uneven, smooth/finely cracked/deeply radially
cracked on flattened part. Flesh dull brown, tough, fibrous; turns dark
brown w/ KOH.

Stalk: 1.5 – 4” x 0.6 – 1.4” [4 – 10 cm x 1.5 – 3.5 cm]
Colored like cap, bluish-green/blackish near base. Smooth, dry. Tapers
up, base swollen. Hollow in age.
Spores: Pale brown.
Frequency: Uncommon.

Notes: Roody says a similar species (S. imbricatus [not found]) lacks
bluish-green at base of stalk.

Habitat: Solitary, groups. On ground at base of decaying conifers (and
sometimes oaks).
Fruiting Body: 6 – 12” x 6 – 10” [15 – 30 cm x
15 – 25 cm] Whitish/pale yellow/tan, flesh thin, white. Densely packed,
lettuce-like, flattened, leafy, folded lobes (darkest and broadest at tips);
solid basal mass near stalk.
Spores: White/light ochre.
Frequency: Occasional.
