CATALOGUE OF SEEDS
CLOSING DOWN SALE SEPTEMBER 2012 TO
FEBRUARY 2013

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING VERY CAREFULLY BEFORE PROCEEDING -

Charles Craib started Penrock Seeds more than 10 years ago. After his assistant, Joan de Villiers, died about 6.5
years ago, another gentleman, Peter Mortimer joined him in the business but only stayed for a year. Charles then
decided to invite us to join him as fully fledged business partners as he had known us since 1998 and we had already
proven our strong business acumen in Simply Indigenous Nursery. We would be responsible for the administration,
finances and marketing. He would be responsible for collecting and supplying the business with all the seed and
motherstock. We were his business partners for about 5 years until the time of his death. 2 years ago he expressed a
desire to leave the seed business and hand it over to us in its entirety together with Penrock Plants at the end of 2012.
He wanted to concentrate on research, writing books and painting. Unfortunately Charles Craib died in March of this
year.

We have encountered many problems since his death including the theft of a great deal of the motherstock that he had
left to us particularly very rare plants and the disappearance from his property of all the confidential company files
including seed localities. This has understandably been a very stressful situation for us. We do believe though, that
many of the rare plants stolen, will eventually surface on EBay or on the plant lists of whoever helped themselves to
these plants. The theft of all the data on seed localities etc is even more serious and has made the situation very
problematic for us as we now have to look countrywide for seed ourselves, a mammoth mission. We have also
encountered a few customers who have been unhappy with the poor germination from some of the seed they have
purchased from Penrock. Unfortunately seed viability can never be guaranteed and where others have had success
with germination where we have failed, we on the other hand have germinated seed that some have not been
successful with. Charles Craib is unfortunately no longer with us and so we cannot be blamed for poor germination
from seed he claimed was viable.

The theft of motherstock and vital information pertaining to localities, has resulted in us deciding to close the seed
business at the end of the financial year in February 2013. We were going to continue with the seed business under
our new bulb production and export company The Roraima Garden but we have decided to sell off most of the
remaining seed very cheapily (and we will not enter into any discussions with anyone should any seed not germinate
as well as expected). Wherever possible we will despatch more than the quantities stipulated, so the margin for error is
reduced. We are also going to sow a large number of the remaining seeds for motherstock and future bulb sales. From
March next year, we will sell very select and limited seed which we will harvest ourselves with date of harvest and
expiry dates clearly stipulated, under The Roraima Garden. We will focus on Pelargonium seed and other unusual and
interesting species.

The Roraima Garden is propagating large numbers of bulbs and growing them onto decent sizes/flowering size such
as Crinum buphanoides, Crinum lugardiae, Crinum macowanii, Ammocharis coranica, Cyrtanthus, Nerines,
Massonias, Resnovas, Gethyllis, Strumarias, Hesseas, Ornithogalum, Albuca etc for the collectors export market and
the wholesale bulb export market. So in the future we will be able to supply large numbers of nursery propagated,
flowering size bulbs at very good prices. We will also be selling some geophytic Pelargoniums and some Othonnas.

We encourage our loyal customers to send us their want lists, so that we can let you know when we harvest fresh
seed and can send you updated bulb lists. We would like to compile a data base of all our customers and their
specific needs regarding seeds and bulbs.

Leigh & Johann

NB: This is a Retail List. There is no general wholesale list, other than the dedicated
wholesale pelargonium seed list. Minimum Order is US$35.00. Due to
the fact that we are selling out of all the seed stocks & the prices
are so low, anyone wanting wholesale must order as many packets
as they require of a specie as we are no longer quoting wholesale
prices.

NB: Before emailing us to place an order or requesting any quotes, please ensure
that you have read the stipuations for doing business with us VERY CAREFULLY
THIS APPLIES PARTICULARLY TO POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS IN THE
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Residents in the USA require an IMPORT PERMIT to import seeds. Please do not waste our time requesting
seed lists and quotes if you do not have one and are not interested in applying for an import permit as WE
CANNOT SEND ANY SEED TO THE USA WITHOUT ONE! The importer is required to phone their closest
USDA (US Department of Agriculture) to apply for one of the 2 permits, the process takes about 3-4 weeks.
The import permit must then be scanned and emailed to us. We do not need a copy of the permit airmailed to
us.
There are TWO (2) TYPES OF IMPORT PERMITS.
A) SMALL LOTS OF SEED IMPORT PERMIT. This permit is for small amounts of seed ie anything up to
2500 in one parcel but not more than 250 of any specie. If more than 250 seeds of any specie are
ordered, they are sent in separate packages ie only 250 per specie in any one parcel.
B) IMPORT PERMIT. This is for large numbers of seed or for regular importers like nurseries that import
bulbs, plants and lots of seed regularly. This import permit requires a Phytosanitary certificate from
the South African Department of Agriculture ie the seed is inspected by plant inspectors. The cost of
a phytosanitary certificate is US$50.00

NB: THE ONUS IS ON AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMERS TO ENSURE THAT THE SEED THEY WANT TO
ORDER IS ALLOWED INTO AUSTRALIA AND THEY NEED TO FAMILIARISE THEMSELVES WITH
THE LIST OF SPECIES NOT PERMITTED ENTRY. WE WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR
ANY SEED THAT IS CONFISCATED AND DESTROYED DUE TO THE ORDERS NOT COMPLYING
WITH IMPORT RESTRICTIONS.

ORDERING AND PAYMENT

Please e-mail your order to us and we will return an invoice with the total cost of the seeds and the postage and packaging.
Methods of Payment
Master or Visa Credit card or International Bank Transfer. WE DO NOT ACCEPT
PAYPAL!!!
Credit Card Payments
We have recently encountered some problems with credit card payments. It seems that some overseas
banks have some or other excuse for delaying or disallowing international credit card transactions.
This has resulted in us having to wait weeks for customers to pay us. We will now process your credit
card as soon as you have received the invoice from us and you have confirmed that you want the
order, we will no longer wait until the day we dispatch the seeds to process any credit card. If your
credit card is denied, you will be informed of this and if we do not receive payment within 3 working

2
days, your order will be cancelled. We will no longer enter into lengthy correspondence with anyone.
If your bank is delaying the transaction or disallowing it, you must make alternative payment
arrangements namely, an international bank transfer. Customers should consider contacting the
credit card division of their bank if they are going to buy from us for the first time and are unsure as
to whether their credit card will be accepted or not. The 3 countries that have recently caused
problems are Sweden, Spain & Argentina.

Please remember that when you email or fax us your credit

card details, you must supply the number of the card, the
expiry date AND the last 3 digits on the back of the card ie
the CVC number.

3. MISSING PARCELS
The policy of the SA Post Office regarding missing parcels:
The Post Office has informed us of the following:
The South African Post office can only be held responsible for a parcel while it is in South Africa, if a parcel goes missing once
it has left South Africa, SAPO is no longer liable and neither are we. We have had 3 cases this year where small seed parcels
have gone astray in Europe and one in Russia, this is very unusual and rarely happened before. We have never had cases of
missing parcels destined for the USA, Canada, the Far East, China, Australia or New Zealand. The South African post office
investigated these 4 missing parcels and they all disappeared in the country of destination so that means that the problem lies at
the post offices and airports that these parcels were destined for. All postal despatches destined for overseas destinations are
accompanied by a list detailing all the parcels in the bag/s. If any incoming shipments of parcels are missing ie the contents of
all the bags are cross checked against the list, the authorities in the country of destination inform South Africa, so that is why the
SAPO says they cannot be held responsible if your parcel arrived in your country but you say it did not reach you. The problem
then lies with your postal system and we have heard that there are major problems with missing post all over Europe. We repeat,
there is absolutely nothing that we can do about missing parcels if they have gone astray in your country. Unfortunately this is
the risk you take when ordering items from overseas. Satisfied customers are very important to us as bulb and seed export is now
our primary income, so we want our customers to be more than satisified with our services and we highly value repeat
customers. The average time it takes for a parcel to reach any foreign destination from South Africa (irrespective of how many
daily flights there are out of South Africa), is 2-3 weeks but for some countries like Italy, it can take many weeks to reach our
customers all due to delays in Italian customs. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding with regard to missing parcels
and delays due to customs, airline strikes, postal strikes and the rare instances of parcel theft.

4. SEED SOWING
Seeds of Southern African plants should be sown at specific times of the year dependant on whether they are from summer or
winter rainfall regions. The best germination results are also sometimes achieved by scarifying seeds and planting them in a
specific germinating mixture such as silt or clay. Some seeds take between 10 days and several years to germinate. With
certain
species little can be done to accelerate this process.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING WITH REGARD TO GERMINATION:

The company makes every effort to supply good quality viable seeds but germination rates cannot be guaranteed as there
are too many variables. These include staggered germination in some genera such as Cyphostemma and
Pelargonium, the knowledge levels individual growers have for sowing seeds of their chosen plants and conditions
under which seeds are sown.
Careful note is taken of occasional problems growers may experience with germinating seeds and these are kept in a
register. This assists us in comparing and contrasting data that may be brought to our attention. We assess each problem
on its merits and aim to find a solution that is in the interests of the customer and the company.
Seeds are sold on the presumption that growers have behind them enough experience to sow and germinate the seeds they
purchase from the company. We will gladly assist with our experience in germinating seeds that are difficult but do not
enter into lengthy correspondence about germination techniques that are common knowledge. These are best guided by
contacting societies that specialise in growing plants in various genera of interest to the grower. Some of this information
as well as tips for growing seeds of rare plants may be obtained by browsing through the numerous newsletters on the
newsletter section of our website.

LEDEBOURIA
The Genus Ledebouria was revised by Mr Stephanus Venter for his MSc. The MSc thesis was submitted to the University of
Natal in 1993 and is unpublished. There is no other adequate reference work on the Genus, apart from this very well researched
MSc. During the course of his MSc work, Mr Venter discovered a number of new Ledebourias, and the names and species
accounts are beginning to appear in Bothalia published by the National Botanical Institute.

Many Ledebourias are currently only known by thesis names and will be formally published in years to come. Where the names
are cited in Mr. Venter's thesis, but are not formally published, we include them on the seed list as 'Venter in ed.' Where species
have recently been published, we include the full reference behind the name. A short description of the new or unpublished
species is included on our seed list.

Sowing Ledebouria Seeds

Ledebouria seed germinates well in the spring and summer months in the Southern Hemisphere, and the equivalent period in the
Northern Hemisphere. Seeds should be scattered on top of sandy soil and very lightly covered with a thin layer of sand.
Germination usually occurs within 14-20 days, but may take much longer, up to a few months.
Seeds germinate in large numbers after a rainshower, should they be grown out in the open. Young seedlings can be pricked
out into larger containers when they are 6-8 weeks old, or else left for a full year and pricked out the following summer.

Germinating Pterodiscus Seeds
Pterodiscus seeds are harvested mainly from August to October when they have had the time to dry out and weather in the harsh
sunlight of the rainless winter. They usually germinate well after 5-6 months of weathering in the sun. Sometimes, however,
this weathering is not enough and some of the seeds will germinate in the second summer season after they have been sown.
Pterodiscus germinate at intervals with peaks in late spring and early summer as well as towards autumn when the temperatures
start to drop.
