Mushrooms are one among the most diverse living organism on earth. Fruit
body produced by fungus that are large enough are considered as mushroom.
Mushrooms are one of the finest creations in nature and exhibit wide variation.
India posses rich mushroom biodiversity due to it diverse climatic, edaphic and
environmental variation.
The biodiversity documentation is a continuing process and efforts in this line
should be systematic and need more determined dedication. In India, many
sporadic attempts on mushroom diversity documentation have been made by
Natrajan and Manjula (1981), Doshi and Sharma (1997), Lakhan Pal (2007),
Upadhaya et al. 2008, Atri et al., 2010, and others through out India in varying
extent. Nearly 6500 collections of mushroom and toadstools belonging to 223
species, 59 genera and 15 families of Agaricales have been made from northwestern
Himalayas by Lakhan Pal and his students since 1976 (Sarbhoy, 1997). But till date,
no specific effort is made to compile this precious germplasm information at
national level. From the literature available at this Directorate, an effort was put to
document the Indian wild mushrooms diversity and is given below:
