Hydrotropism

What is Hydrotropism?
• Hydrotropism (hydro- “water”; tropism “involuntary orientation by an organism, that
involves turning or curving as a positive or negative response to a stimulus”) is a plant’s
growth response in which the direction of growth is determined by a stimulus or gradient in
water concentration.
• Hydrotropism is a genuine response of roots to a moisture gradient to avoid drought.
What is gradient ?
• The difference in the concentration of a substance between two areas is called the
concentration gradient . The bigger the difference, the steeper the concentration gradient
and the faster the molecules of a substance will diffuse.
Explain the Hydrotropism in simplest !
• Hydrotropism is a form of tropism characterized by the growth or movement response of
a cell or an organism to moisture or water.
