• Paul Wesley appeared on Watch What Happens Live and answered fan questions about The Vampire Diaries.
  • He mentioned that Stefan's death in the show's finale was actually his idea.
  • Paul also talked about how he influenced his character while he was on the show.

Fans of The Vampire Diaries might still be shocked over the show's ending and Stefan Salvatore's death even two years after the finale aired, but Paul Wesley says that it was actually his idea that Stefan suffered the consequences over his actions.

While appearing in Watch What Happens Live, Paul revealed that he told the writers to kill off Stefan and that it was something that was right for the character due to his past.

"Yes, he died. I was very happy he died and I had actually requested that he died. He did a lot of bad things and I felt like he deserved death," Paul said on the show.

In the Watch What Happens Live after show, he also talked about his own idea of the show's finale and how it would've changed things for Damon and Elena if he had his way.

"I feel good about it [the ending]. I honestly think both brothers should've died. I would've liked that we both died and that Elena, the girl at the end of the show, like all her memory was wiped and she went on to live a normal life and forgot that we ever existed. I think that would've been nice."

Paul not only managed to convince the writers to kill his character off, but he also had them make Stefan more of a bad guy than he was originally supposed to be.

"On The Vampire Diaries, I was playing the good guy. I felt like I was started to become a little bit typecast as the good brother and I really tried my best to influence them to allow me to be the bad guy and they made that happen in season three," Paul revealed. "I turned into a Ripper and I felt like that was a big part of my doing."

He also talked about how the show jumped the shark with its characters in Mystic Falls.

"I mean, everyone was a supernatural being. What the hell? There needs to be some humans," he said. "We're in the real world. Everyone in the whole town was a mystical creature. Maybe it should've been like 50/50."

While Paul noted that you won't be seeing Stefan back in Mystic Falls in Legacies, he has already directed some of the episodes and the show gave his character a lovely tribute during season one.
