Matt Besler has interest from Sunderland, Fulham, among others

Matt Besler has been linked with a move to Europe ever since his strong play at the World Cup, but whether he moves will be determined by Monday. According to Greg Seltzer, 10 clubs are interested in signing Besler and there is a hard deadline of Monday to get the deal done (update: Sporting KC CEO Robb Heineman said no decision will be coming on Monday). If it's not wrapped up by then, he will stay with Sporting Kansas City.

Seltzer reports that of the 10 clubs interested in Besler, one comes from the Bundesliga, with the rest coming from England. Sunderland and Fulham are the most high profile teams, with the Black Cats not putting in a bid, while the Cottagers have. Of course, Sunderland would be the more enticing landing spot for Besler because they are in the Premier League.

Sporting Kansas City have been preparing to lose Besler, with team president Robb Heinemann saying there was a "strong possibility" the defender would be sold to a European club, but they won't let him go on the cheap. Sporting's price for him would set a record price, according to Seltzer, which means about $6 million.

Besler's contract with Sporting runs out after next season so they don't have an incredible amount of leverage. If they don't sell him this summer, they will have to sell him in the last year of his deal, when they won't get near his value, or risk losing him on a free. They could also sign him to a new contract, something that is hardly out of the realm of possibility if he is open to it, which would see him get a fat pay raise and keep him in MLS for the foreseeable future.

At 27 years old, this may be Besler's last chance to Europe. He may want that, and do whatever he can to push it through, or he may be content in MLS and willing to stay with hometown Sporting if they are willing to pony up. He hasn't said much about a potential transfer so at this point it is largely speculation.
