- The Supreme Court ruled 7-1 in Judge Ferguson's favor. They claimed the Separate Car Act was not a violation of the 14th amendment, because while it required separate cars, the cars were still equal. and the 14th amendment only calls for legal equality and not social equality.
- Though one Justice did agree with Plessy. Justice John Marshall Harlan argued that segregation laws imply that races are not equal, and therefore are a violation of the 14th amendment
- Despite this, Plessy was found guilty.
