According to the Domesday Book, Wincheleie – a village set between Dartmoor and Exmoor – was a prosperous community, with land enough for 40 ploughs and a park for beasts, belonging to the king. It paid £30 tax in coinage each year, a substantial sum. Modern Winkleigh remains blessed. It boasts a brace of pubs, a village school, a butcher, a fishmonger, a general store, a doctor and even a vet. It sounds idyllic, and the statistics seem to concur. A national survey conducted by a savings bank and taking into account earnings, house prices, school results and crime rates has concluded that the Devon village is the very best place in the country to raise a family. The contented locals may have found their arcadia just off the A3124 – but will now doubtless be praying that not too many envious outsiders come tootling down that road to join them.
