Cherie Blair had 'best night of her life' with Silvio Berlusconi

Cherie Blair has spoken about how she fell for Silvio Berlusconi’s charms, revealing that she had the best night of her life during a free holiday for the Blairs in the Italian prime minister’s Sardinian villa.

"Silvio has a very large personality, and he is not the same as other world leaders, which is nice,” Mrs Blair told the Italian magazine *A.* * *

"I have never had such a night as the one we spent with him in Sardinia.

There were fireworks which spelt out ’Viva Tony!’,” she said, referring to the holiday which the Blairs took in August 2004.

At the time, Mr Berlusconi famously donned a spotted bandana to avoid having to reveal his hair transplant operation. The perma-tanned billionaire’s sprawling Sardinian estate includes amphitheatres and a large garden of rare cacti.

Last summer, Mr Berlusconi wowed other guests by exploding a life-size volcano in his garden, launching a cascade of lava into the sea. His neighbours were so alarmed that they called the fire brigade.

"We all found ourselves singing Summertime together. Silvio even interrupted the singer and made me sing. I imagine the singer is still wondering why — my voice was certainly not as good as hers,” said Mrs Blair.

She added that she believed her rendition of When I am 64 at Beijing University in 2003 has since been remixed into a dance tune in Ibiza.

Mrs Blair told the magazine that she felt more alone lately, since Mr Blair took up his new role as a Middle East peace envoy. “He was away for 10 days, and then came back for Leo’s first communion and now he is in the Middle East again. We certainly see each other less than before.”

The household habits of the Royals were also laid bare by Mrs Blair, who claimed that Queen Elizabeth “helped to clear the dishes together with members of her family", on a visit by the Blairs to Balmoral. Prince Philip, meanwhile, “cooked on a barbecue that he had designed himself. When he saw that we were interested in his barbecue, he kindly gave us one.”

Mrs Blair said: “The first year, I tried to help, but tradition states that it should be just the Queen and her family to clear up for their guests. It was extraordinary, for someone of my background, to see.”
