  • White sands backed by a mountainous landscape are what awaits visitors to this pristine Donegal beach. Wrapping around the coast, Maghera beach stretches on for miles at low tide. In one direction, the deep blues of the Atlantic Ocean, and the other, dunes beyond which the countryside quickly rises over 500 metres above the coast.

Maghera is located on the northern side of the Slieve League Peninsula a short distance from the village of Ardara. Maghera Beach sits at the mouth of a deep inlet which stretches back to Killystewart. This creates strong currents when the tide moves and makes it dangerous to swim here.

Whilst Maghera beach itself is lovely enough to warrant a visit, most people come here for the caves. Set beneath Slieve Tooey mountain there are over 20 caves along with a number of arches and tunnels. It is important to note the caves are only accessible at low tide and getting stranded by an incoming tide is a very real possibility if you time it wrong.
