Officers also scrambled to the scene, on the Queensway between two roundabouts, after receiving reports of the crash at 10.30pm.

The horror pile-up sparked a major emergency response and involved three cars - a white Mercedes C200,  a silver Peugeot 207 and a black Toyota Celica - and a bus.

The 18-year-old male driver of the Mercedes was rushed to hospital as well as three female passengers, two aged 16 and another aged 17.

All four teenagers sustained serious injuries in the crash.

The 72-year-old man behind the wheel of the Peugeot and his 69-year-old female passenger were also taken to hospital.

They were later able to go home after receiving treatment for their injuries.

The driver of the Toyota, a 52-year-old man, and the passenger, a 12-year-old boy, manage to escape the crash unharmed.

Another 17-year-old man travelling in the Mercedes was also uninjured and did not require hospital treatment.

No one on the bus was injured.

The road was closed while crash investigations took place and it reopened around noon this afternoon.

Photos from the scene show numerous emergency response units including ambulances and police vehicles at the scene.

Around a dozen paramedics were also spotted as officers locked down the road.

Andrew Fulton, 27, was on the bus heading home after a 12-hour shift when the crash happened.

The chef, who suffered whiplash in the incident, told the Scottish Sun: "It was pretty traumatic. I've had to take the day off work today and I'm on my way to the hospital.

"I was on the top deck of the bus and we were coming up to the roundabout at the technology park when we just heard a huge bang.

"People across the bus started screaming because everyone just got flung forward.

"We went downstairs and we could see the back of the bus had been smashed and the window had smashed on the top of people.

"The road just went to a standstill.

"As soon as we walked out we were greeted by one car crashed at one side, a white car on top of a black car on the island and people were still stuck inside.

"They weren't able to get doors open to get them out - they were totally trapped.

"There were loads of people crowding around the white car and trying to rip the doors open without injuring anyone and trying to pull them out windows without hurting them on the glass but we were just waiting for emergency services to come.

"I was in total shock last night and I've had to take the day off today - I woke up this morning and I couldn't look left or right so just went straight to the hospital."

He added: "I can't imagine what it must've been like for those in the cars.

"Everyone was just in a state of utter confusion - some people were shouting not to move them and others were shouting to get them out.

"It was pretty crazy - just not something you'd expect at that time of night.

"I had just finished a 12-hour shift and it happened right at the end of my journey.

"It was the loudest bang you'd ever hear in your life - it put the fear of death in you.

"The scenes after were the worst.

"I walked home after it. I was shaking and felt quite sick but I was in complete shock."

Police have confirmed that enquiries into the incident are ongoing and they are appealing for anyone with information about the crash to come forward.

They are particularly keen to speak with anyone who may have dashcam footage of the area from the time of the crash.

Road Policing Sergeant Stewart Taylor said: “We know this is a busy stretch of road and there will have been other drivers in the area around the time of the crash.
