Helichrysum meyeri-johannis

$12.00

One packet contains 10 seeds.

Helichrysum meyeri-johannis, one of East Africa’s mountain helichrysums (or “everlasting flowers”), adds a splash of color to inhospitable alpine environments. Its daisy-like flowers are pink with a red tinge on the tips, though they become white with age. They can generally bloom at any time in the year. This herbaceous perennial is found at elevations of 2500 to 4250 m (8200 to 14000 ft) on mountains and hills like the Aberdares, Cherang'any, Elgon, and Kilimanjaro. Growing in clumps, it reaches approximately 0.5 m (20 in) in height. Swirling rosettes of leaves are thinly covered with matted, woolly hairs. H. meyeri-johannis is so valued for its beauty that when Bernard Verdcourt—a renowned botantist from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew—reached the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, local porters presented to him a wreath of flowers from the plant, embedded among woven Lycopodium stems. Though this expedition took place in the 1970s, the wreath still resides in a museum collection at Kew.
