In 1953 he took to the professional stage joining the acting troupe Compagnie Grenier Hussenot.

But it was his work in TV and film that would propel him to stardom, especially in the 1972 classic Hearth Fires, which was nominated for Best Picture at the Cannes Film Festival that year.

He became a comedy legend in France after starring in the Golden Globe-nominated movie An Elephant Can Be Extremely Deceptive — in which he played a husband who risks his marriage for a fling with a model.

Announcing his retirement in 2013, Jean said: Suddenly, I realise that I am counted on by many people — that the French have affection for me.

"I did not know that. God, how good it is to know that you are loved. Love is what brings you".

The father-of-six, who was married twice, leaves behind widow Françoise Vidal.
