Folkestone is a funky example of the power of well-aimed regeneration. This once shabby old seaside resort now feels like a younger, fresher and cheaper version of Brighton. Add in high-achieving schools, great countryside and the Eurotunnel on the doorstep, and all the fundamentals for a top-class family life are there.

From F51, the world’s first multistorey skatepark, to comedy, gigs and films at the Quarterhouse, there’s no excuse for being bored in Folkestone. The revitalised Harbour Arm promenade is lined with street food stalls and bars with grandstand views of the White Cliffs of Dover. A stroll south along the seafront will take you past joyously painted beach huts and through the landscaped Coastal Park.

The return of good times is down to investment
