The actor talks about ageing, being a sex symbol, acting with his son in Twelve Angry Men, and trying to save sick bees

For several decades Martin Shaw has been the handsomely baggy face of law enforcement. In the 1970s, as one of The Professionals, he was dealing out rough justice in a pair of nut-crushing jeans and a Ford Capri. Subsequently he took over from Roy Marsden to play P..D. James’s sensitive detective Adam Dalgliesh , then donned a white wig to play maverick Judge John Deed in the eponymous series. Most recently he has been solving on-screen crime as Sixties cop George Gently.

“Law seems to be an ongoing theme of my recent career,” he says. “I enjoy playing a lawyer more than anything. I enjoy enlightened argument and the exchange of ideas.”

Now he’s starring in yet another courtroom drama — on stage. Twelve
