Doctors should not go on strike because it risks compromising patient care, the new president of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) has said.

In an interview with The Times, Dr Sarah Clarke said she sympathised with junior doctors who were threatening industrial action, describing the medical workforce as “exhausted and demoralised”. But she warned: “I don’t agree that strike action is the right route to go because you’re talking about patients here and you are talking about impacting on patient care.”

The British Medical Association’s junior doctors committee has said it will ballot for industrial action if it does not get a commitment from the government for “pay restoration” to 2008 levels by the end of next week.
