It has been a busy few weeks for Prince William. First he blanked his brother in front of a global audience of millions, then he vetoed his uncle Andrew from parading in public and, as of today, he’s officially middle-aged. When he blows out the candles on his 40th birthday cake, he might reflect that, while you can’t choose your relations, at least with the Windsors there’s never a dull moment.

On the plus side the Platinum Jubilee celebrations went off without a hitch. Some courtiers had feared that a combination of Megxit and Prince Andrew’s disgrace might mute public enthusiasm, but in the event their fears were unfounded.

The Queen was the star of the show, naturally, but the picture-perfect Cambridges came a close
