More than 20 schemes to boost local economy

Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council has unveiled plans for an ambitious economic strategy to support businesses, enhance high streets and boost tourism across the borough.

A range of council-led initiatives and partnerships over the next four years will deliver business grants, retail improvements, advice and events to help strengthen the local economy and provide jobs.

The draft strategy was approved by the council’s regeneration scrutiny select committee in July and is due to be reviewed by members of the Cabinet on 5 September.

Supporting retail centres will be a key area of focus. While a recent survey of nearly 600 shops across the borough showed a reduction in vacant units [down from 48 in 2022 to 38 in 2023] the strategy outlines a number of ongoing challenges, notably the shift to online retailing and downturns in the national economy.

An action plan to support the strategy sets out 29 separate schemes and partnerships to help achieve the goal of creating ‘a resilient, dynamic and inclusive economy that fosters sustainable growth’.

Plans include:

  • Grants and mentoring for West Kent businesses starting in September 2023
  • Green grants for at least 20 local businesses to help cut their carbon footprint
  • Development of proposals for re-generation of Tonbridge town centre
  • Funding for shopfront improvements in retail centres across the borough
  • Marketing Tonbridge and Malling as a tourism destination
  • Jobs fairs to bring together employers and those looking for work
  • An art project to highlight attractions to people arriving in Tonbridge by train

Cllr Robin Betts, cabinet lead on climate change, regeneration and property, said: ‘Tonbridge and Malling is a great place to do business but we must not underestimate the challenges for our local economy as post pandemic changes in customer behaviour continue to evolve and cost of living pressures mean many people’s spending power has been seriously reduced.

‘In tandem with these factors, there’s a growing imperative for businesses to play their part in tackling climate change. We’re leading by example in this area but also want to support the community to move towards carbon net zero.

‘This strategy will help businesses rise to these and other challenges, ensuring our local economy is firing on all cylinders. In doing so, we can maintain the borough’s reputation as a place that offers a high quality of life for residents, businesses and visitors alike.’
