The Arrow-verse has had no shortage of Superman Returns jokes since Brandon Routh joined the franchise in Season 3—before subsequently pivoting to spinoff Legends of Tomorrow—and this fall’s five-part “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover will finally complete the joke. Routh will once again slip on his Superman tights, joining Supergirl star Tyler Hoechlin as an alt-universe Man of Steel.

Per Deadline, the five-episode event—airing across Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman for three episodes in December, two in January—will at some point see Routh breaking with his CW gig as The Atom/Ray Palmer, and resuming his role as the title character from 2006’s Bryan Singer-directed Superman Returns. Star Tyler Hoechlin will also return in the role, having originated his part in Supergirl Season 2 and appeared in last year’s “Elseworlds” crossover.

The “Crisis” event itself—so named for the 12-issue DC Comics series that concentrated decades of continuity—will have an easy time explaining different actors in the role, given the multiple “Earths” involved. Last year’s event saw Flash star John Wesley Shipp re-suiting up as the Flash he played on his own 1990s series, while the prior “Invasion!” crossover even referenced Routh’s character having a “cousin” resembling Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl.

Said Routh to Entertainment Weekly, “It’s an opportunity for me to kind of say hello and goodbye to the character in a way I didn’t get to the first time. Being a young individual of 24, 25, I thought, ‘Oh, I’m going to do this for years and make multiple movies.’ And that of course didn’t happen. I’m just very honored to be able to do this one last time.”

The CW series are otherwise expected to premiere in October, with “Crisis” kicking off its first episodes in December. It is unclear where, or for how long Routh’s Superman will appear.
