Charlize Theron is clearing up any mystery surrounding her former relationship with Sean Penn.

In an interview on The Howard Stern Show on Monday, the actress was asked if she and Penn were ever engaged to which she responded, “What? That’s not true. No, I did not ‘almost get married to Sean,’ that’s such bullshit. No, we dated, that was literally all we did. We dated.”

However, it's an understandable mistake given that in December of 2014, it was widely reported that the pair had gotten secretly engaged in Paris in November of that year.

“It was a relationship, for sure. We were definitely exclusive, but it was for barely a year,” she continued. “We never moved in. I was never going to marry him. It was nothing like that. I’ve never wanted to get married. That’s never been something that’s important to me.”

She and Penn reportedly began dating in late 2013 before ultimately calling it off in the summer of 2015. And while marriage may have never been on the table, in Elle's June 2015 cover story, Theron did call him “the love of my life.”

Theron also told Stern she has “never been lonely” and isn't rushing into another relationship anytime soon, adding, “I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to live with somebody again. To be totally frank, they might have to buy the house next to me.”

But while the couple may be a thing of the past, at least we'll always have The Last Face, the straight-to-VOD film directed by Penn and starring Theron that had a rough go of it at the Cannes Film Festival.
