Grow blackberry plants in a sunny position in any well drained soil allowing a distance of 90cm (36") between plants. Primocane blackberries may require some support so plant them against a wall or trellis, or support them on a framework of wires stretched between sturdy 1.8m (6') posts. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole. Plant blackberries at the same soil level as they were in their original pots and firm them into the ground. Water well after planting.
Water well for the first year until plants are fully established. Tie stems to their supports as they grow. When berries begin to develop, place a net over the plants to protect your crop from greedy birds! Prune primocane blackberry plants to ground level each February and mulch around the base of the canes with compost or well rotted manure to help retain soil moisture throughout the summer. Alternatively two smaller crops can be obtained early and late in the season by leaving first-year fruiting canes to grow on for another year. After fruiting has finished in their second year, prune them to ground level. Tie in any first-year fruiting canes at the same time.
