Art Deco Is Back, This Time with More Subdued Finishes and Sophisticated Motifs

In 2024, we’re letting the Art Deco take center stage. Since its rise to popularity with the International Exposition of Modern Decorative & Industrial Art in 1925, few design movements have felt as original, indulgent or glamorous as Art Deco. With lush materials like lacquer, marble, brass and shagreen, dazzling jewel tones and sumptuous silks, this opulent moment in design remains one that captures our fancy as well as the eyes of many of our favorite designers.

In recent markets, our style team has noticed an influx in Art Deco-influenced designs making an appearance in everything from geometric wallpapers to resplendent rugs to light fixtures to barware. The industrial shapes and stately look set an admittedly swanky scene that no one can get enough of.

It’s hard to reason why this century-old trend is back, but we aren’t complaining. Instead, we’re celebrating the resurgence of an aesthetic that feels boundless and ever evolving with the times. Looking back to the twentieth century, the beginnings of Art Deco can actually be traced back to pre-World War I. However, after the war, the ramblings became more mainstream and deeply intertwined with the partying, over-served scene of Parisian nightlife. The flappers with their bobs and baubles almost blended in with the ornate wall coverings and gilded frames of the spaces they inhabited.

Now it’s our turn to bring back the glamor with either subtle or grandiose nods to an era that’s long over, but never forgotten.

Buying art—and filling your home with it—was an important aspect of living in the 1920s. The growing Abstract Expressionist movement, another artistic reaction to the First World War, would occasionally make its way into the Art Deco universe.
