About

Llandeilo is one of the prettiest towns in Wales, a quaint and charming place with friendly locals, superb inns and an interesting range of shops. Many visitors come to use the town as a base to explore the Brecon Beacons, Fforest Fawr, the Black Mountain or the Pembrokeshire National Park which are all within easy reach. Even closer however are a number of attractions that should appeal to any historian. Dinefwr Castle is one of the most spectacular surviving medieval castles in Wales and was home to one of the early Welsh kings, Rhys ap Gruffyd. The famous Carreg Cennen Castle is also nearby, as are the National Botanic Gardens, Aberglasney and Newton House. Llandeilo's most famous son was Sir Rhys ap Thomas, a nobleman who slew Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth.

LOCAL HISTORY & CULTURE
Llandeilo entered into life as a religious centre founded by Saint Teilo, from whom the town derives its name. The Romans had made use of the fertile lands in the Towy Valley centuries earlier and established a fort in nearby Dinefwr Park. After the Romans left Wales it fell to a leader of the emergent Christian faith to maintain a community here. St Teilo was a cousin of St David and a hugely influential clergyman, the monastic settlement he created is on the site of the present Church. As Llandeilo's ecclesiastical importance diminished it resumed its quietly prosperous existence as an agricultural town.
