KARL LAGERFELD has given Keira Knightley's low-key wedding his seal of approval. The actress got married to Klaxons musician James Righton in a town hall in the south of France last month - she wore Chanel Couture.

"She had the least pretentious wedding ever," said Lagerfeld. "The whole thing was relaxed. I think that it's perfect. After all, they lived together for quite a time. It's not as if she is a young girl of 18 who sees the husband for the first time. She is not a country girl. Yes, I liked the light-heartedness of this wedding."

Knightley recently played Coco Chanel in a Chanel film focusing on the opening of the designer's first store in the French seaside town of Deauville. Lagerfeld prefers the actress' "genius" portrayal of the fashion visionary to that of Audrey Tautou in 2009 film Coco Before Chanel.

"Oh, the movie was bad. She [Tautou] played it like women's lib, like Simone de Beauvoir 30 years before The Second Sex," Lagerfeld told The Telegraph. "No, no, no, no. Chanel was a different kind of woman. Keira had it. She is a young woman in love, not a spinster."

Chanel will unveil another film about Coco Chanel this autumn at the label's next Metiers d'Arts show in Texas. The movie, entitled The Return, will concentrate on another period in the designer's life, when Chanel was revived in the Fifties after its pared-down elegance fell out of fashion as Christian Dior's overtly feminine New Look became popular.

"The French press hated the collection and it was the American press who rediscovered her," Lagerfeld added. "So we will go to America. And in that, she will be mean and bitter."
